How "Social" are You?
Analyze the Strengths and Weaknesses of Social Media
By Deborah L. Daily
People from all walks of life are talking about social media. From college students to new mothers to webpreneurs, everyone is learning how to harness the power of social media. From blogging to forum posting to LinkedIn, people use different forms of social media every day.

What is Social Media?
Social Media includes but is not limited to twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, blogs, forums, message boards and any other form of online social interaction in which people share information, advice and knowledge. Anyone can access social media. Through content, photos and video, people share a variety of thoughts and concepts via social media.
How Social are You?

Through Social Media people share and ask advice of friends, trusted experts or any other socially active individual regarding products and services. This is why it’s such a good place for business people to let everyone know about their latest goods and services. Just as people have always sought the opinion and debate of others in the offline world, they have now moved online in a big way. With over 260 million people accessing the Internet on a daily basis in the United States alone, your organization needs a strong online presence.

What is Traditional Media?
Before the dawn of online social media, people had to get the word out about events on traditional media. From birth announcements to death notices to advertisements, traditional media was the only way to share information. Newspapers, television and magazines are all examples of traditional media and are owned privately or by the government. For a fee, people purchase space in traditional media when they have something important to say.

What are the Differences between Social Media and Traditional Media?
There are several major differences between using social media and traditional media. Let's consider what makes each form of communication viable and unique:

1.   Content on social media appears in real time so news and updates are announced right away. It may take weeks or even months for content to appear in traditional media.
2.   Traditional media must answer to society for the quality and accuracy of its content while social media remains largely unregulated.
3.   Social media can be owned by any individual or business while traditional media may be more costly to obtain and manage since advertisement space must be purchased.
4.   Social Media is conducted by the people for the people. It is often conducted by average people, while newspapers and other traditional media are performed by professional journalists. However, the number of “social media experts” in the marketplace has skyrocketed in the last year and more companies are hiring such staff to professionally handle their social media presence.

Why Should You Choose Social Media?
If you want to talk in real time without any specific skills, social media is an ideal means of communication. Update clients and employees immediately, share your latest photos with family across the country and talk to friends half way around the globe. Networking and connecting with new business associates and friends can increase your circle of contacts and result in a boost in revenue. Social networking is easy and enjoyable through online social media.

Why Should You Choose Traditional Media?
Certain announcements are expected to appear in traditional media by law or social obligation. People often seek information about debts, legal actions, birth announcements and deaths in traditional media. Additionally, there are still plenty of people who aren't online. Rather than getting information through a computer, these folks read or watch traditional media. If you don't post content on traditional media, you miss out on networking opportunities with people that don't go online.

Bottom Line
Social Media is more complex than it appears and still in its early stages. It takes a thoughtful, consistent approach that must be maintained over time. While the benefits of social media marketing have been overwhelmingly praised in the news, the damage of a poorly managed social media misstep can be disastrous and hurtful to the brand.

Buckaroo Marketing | New Media takes a conservative approach to Social Media Marketing. While buckaroo realizes the immense growth, popularity and predicted staying-power of social media, it should be used as a supplement to traditional marketing rather than the only source of marketing and should not be approached lightly.

Let Buckaroo Marketing | New Media take your company into an ever-growing social media world with a deliberate plan tailored to meet your needs.
