Laugh (LOL) Your Way to Better Work, Health
By Deborah L. Daily
Whether you prefer to “Ha-ha,” “Hehe” or even “LOL,” it’s all the same. Laughing is a universal language that binds us all over the world and even across species. Research shows dogs, chimpanzees and even rats have been known to laugh.

While we laugh to relax, laugh at a funny movie or just laugh at ourselves, where we laugh could be more important than why. Laughing at work not only lightens the mood of sometimes serious work environments, some research is beginning to show it can increase worker happiness and thus productivity and creativity as well.

Helene Grover, the founder of Laughter Strategies in Australia, runs weekly office workshops intended to spread humor. "When individuals learn to lighten up, they enhance their attitude towards their work and life, improving their overall well-being," she says.

Humor = Humility. Laughing allows people to release their inner goofiness and let go of worries that others may judge them.

“A paucity of play can be evidence of a toxic lack of humility. There’s something disarmingly humble about losing it to laughter.” Joseph Grenny said, author of the BusinessWeek article “LOL @ Work.”

The ability to laugh at work means employees can trust that their co-workers and peers will not judge them but rather join them in the humor thus building a bond that could lead to better teamwork and overall comfort level.

“After they've had a good laugh people breathe easier, become more creative, drop defenses, open their minds, and speak more freely,” Grenny said.

In short, when people are more comfortable, they’re more successful.

Not only does the act of laughter free our minds it affects our entire body. As our bodies convulse in laughter, our muscles tighten and then eventually relax, similar to that of exercise. Our heart rate even increases. CBS News cited the work of laughter researcher, William Fry, who claimed his heart rate reached the same level during a minute of laughter than it would during 10 minutes on a rowing machine.

While laughing burns calories, don’t skip the gym just yet. According to that same story, “One piece of chocolate has about 50 calories; at the rate of 50 calories per hour, losing one pound would require about 12 hours of concentrated laughter!”

Similar to chocolate, laughter also gives us a natural high by releasing the “feel good” brain chemical, dopamine.

If everyone had that kind of feel-good happiness at work, it might mean fewer sick days, complaints and in the end a higher sense of well-being. It certainly couldn’t hurt worker productivity.

Perhaps, Robert R. Provine, professor of psychology and neuroscience and author of Laughter: A Scientific Investigation, states it best: "No study has shown that laughter produces a direct health benefit," Provine said, “largely because it's hard to separate laughter from just good feelings.”

He asks, however, does it really matter? “Isn’t the fact that laughter feels good when you do it, isn’t that enough?” he said.

So, don’t be afraid to let a few chuckles out at your desk and hopefully, someone will join you!
