Setting Goals To Grow Your Business!
By Deborah L. Daily

As 2008 begins, many of our New Year's resolutions revolve around self-improvement, reduced stress, quality of life, and growing our business. Most New Year's resolutions evaporate into thin air by February 1st. Our intentions are good and well meaning, but often times we set ourselves up for failure due to unrealistic and non-specific goal setting.
In the marketing arena, often clients feel overwhelmed – television, radio, billboards, press releases, multi-media, website development, newspaper, industry publications, trade shows, Valpak, Yellow Pages, newsletters – electronic and print, brochures, etc. The list is endless. Where do you turn? Do you know your target market and how best to reach them? How do you know what will produce the greatest return with the minimum investment? |

If in doubt, I recommend trying one form of advertising. Track your inquiries and maintain a consistent database. Once you start developing a history, you can better discern where your dollars are most effectively invested.

Personally, I love the Internet. For example, with eNewsletters, we can actually track by person who has or has not received and opened your eNewsletter. In addition we can specifically track where the recipient has traveled from your eNewsletter to within your website. We can also advise who has subscribed or unsubscribed from your mailing list to help you better determine those interested in your products or services. |
Here are some rules to goal setting in growing your business:
Don't try everything at once. Create your list of goals and prioritize according to importance and impact. Be selective and consistent.
Be Specific. Instead of stating, "I'm going to increase my business by 25% in 2003," break down your goals so they are SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.
Make a plan. Don't be afraid to develop a marketing plan to chart your activity and growth. By putting it in writing, you clarify your thoughts, create a greater sense of commitment, and are better able to communicate your company's direction.
Track your results. If you do not track your results, you will never know what works and what doesn't. Consequently, you might be wasting valuable resources instead of investing wisely.
