Generation X Dominates Social Media |
 |

In February, Facebook reached over 400 million users while Twitter boasted an estimated 25 million users in 2009.
The percent growth from year-to-year of social media platforms is staggering. Twitter projects a 300 percent growth in 2010 with 100 million users. Such impressive numbers have businesses clamoring to get in on the action.
Before taking the leap, however, ask the following: Who is your target audience?
Consider the following charts that break down social media users by age.

Many would assume that Generation Z, also called “Digital Natives” and Generation Y, often referred to as “Millennials”, named for their tech-savvy ways with communications, media and digital technologies, would top the list and dominate social media. Surprisingly, however Generation X and Baby Boomers are the most active across all three major social sites; Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
It is not surprising that Generation X and Baby Boomers, who may be more likely to own businesses at their age, show high numbers on LinkedIn, a highly business-focused networking site. However, it is striking to see how quickly these generations have adapted to Facebook, a social site initially started for college students. Users aged 35-49 out-number younger generations 25-34 years old on Facebook by about 15 percent. Users 25-34 account for only 16 percent of Facebook users.
Furthermore, Twitter shows similar numbers with user 35-49 years-old accounting for 34 percent of the Twitter population, compared to 9.5 percent by ages 18-24 and 18.96 percent by 25-34 year-olds.
So, what should be taken away from all these numbers?
Why are two generations (Generation X and Baby Boomers) with a collective age span ranging from 29 to 67 years-old, flocking to social media?
Is it because these generations are more likely to own businesses and feel the need to promote themselves in new ways? Or are they simply hiring the “Digital Natives” of Generation Z to do the work for them?
Perhaps, social media has busted the age bracket barriers and opened into a broader spectrum of markets.
One conclusion is for sure, social media is an avenue of marketing that most cannot afford to miss out on.
However, keep in mind social media is only one piece of the marketing puzzle. One must consider many factors such as the target audience, the decision-making process, the actual message, and the timing.
Is your audience on social media? Not sure?
