Do You Know What To Expect?
By Deborah L. Daily

Do you know what to expect when you order material from a printer? Do you know what you are entitled to when you embroider apparel? Do you know what constitutes good logo design? Why isn’t a PDF proof always a good idea? In photography, when should you use a digital camera or a 35mm camera? What standards are used for sound web design and why?

When I first started working with a client, they had already purchased notepads from another company. Much to their surprise, the end result was nothing like they expected! The color combination was terrible. Suddenly, they were stuck with $500 inner-office scratch pads! My client called her sales representative to discuss the situation. At once the sales rep became defensive and said, “It’s not my fault, and there’s nothing I can do!” Now that’s customer service with a smile!
Do You Know What To Expect?

After discussing the turn of events with my client, I discovered a huge communication “gap” between my client, the sales representative and the printer involved. Bottom line, my client didn’t understand the process, what to expect or the appropriate questions to ask! The sales person did not explain the approval process, provide color samples, and did not understand the print process either. In this instance, the sales person was simply an order taker.

Outsourcing allows you to focus on your core competencies; thus, accomplish more with greater freedom.

My client had every right to withhold payment and request a reprint. Upon doing so, the sales person was neither apologetic nor helpful and had the gall to make my client return the defectives to her home because she was “too busy” to pick them up! Obviously, not all sales representatives would have handled the situation like this. I was simply astonished that this kind of pre-historic service still existed — not to mention the difficulty to survive in a competitive industry with this kind of conduct!

What’s The Moral Of This Story?
From a sales perspective, this sales person’s name is “mud” according to my client. The lost opportunities in repeat business, in referrals, and in negative publicity equate to a tarnished reputation and loss in revenue!

Do You Know What To Expect? From a service perspective, if the simple words “I’m sorry, I’ll see what I can do” had been spoken, followed by prompt and courteous action, the situation could have been completely different. Not every project goes perfectly; however, a key element to any business relationship – the client’s trust and faith that you are going to take care of him or her – no matter what!

From an outsourcing perspective, my client never saw a color proof or sample color swatches. She didn’t know she could. How could she know if the printer mixed the inks properly to arrive at the correct color? She couldn’t because she didn’t know what to ask. How much productive time did she lose trying to resolve this frustrating situation?

Outsourcing allows you to focus on your core competencies; thus, accomplish more with greater freedom. Having a 3rd party expert frees you from all the details, challenges, and worrying over “what if.” Our clients appreciate the time we save and peace of mind we provide. Due to our increased buying volume and partnership with superior vendors, we are able to negotiate more effectively on our client’s behalf. You don’t have to be the resident expert in everything. Let Buckaroo advise you on what you can expect and what you’re entitled to. It’s a wise investment.
