Trade Show Savvy?
By Deborah L. Daily

Trade shows -- usually a tremendous but time consuming investment -- from pre-show promotion, promotional items, strategic marketing, trade show management, display development, storage, shipping to display set up and staffing. However, if done right, the dividends can be huge -- increased exposure and new customers.
We have listed ten areas you should concentrate on in order to have a successful trade show.
Be Prepared
Be prepared. Make sure your customers and prospects know you'll be at the trade show. Make it easy for them to find you and tell them your exact location. Actively work your phone list, email list, and direct mail list. If you wish, use the carrot and stick approach -- the first 100 customers to visit will receive a FREE t-shirt, coffee mug or other promotional item. |

Research
Research content and design before putting your booth together. Rather than design for what you think customers want, take a more creative approach and ask your customers what they'd like to see and then give it to them! Your customers are an invaluable source of information. Tap into it!
Don't Forget Your Purpose
The whole point of a trade show is to tap into your concentrated target market -- readily available at your fingertips! Attendees have paid to come and see you and they are interested in your products and services. This is the equivalent to big game hunting! But instead of sending your sales force out to track them down, you have a captured audience under one roof!
Bring Your Very Best
Now is not the time to initiate the new hire. Time is your most precious commodity! Staff your booth with qualified and knowledgeable personnel who KNOW and CARE about your company, its products and services. This is what your customers and prospects expect.
Make It Sensory
Don't be afraid to use new technologies to share and experience information. Studies show if we engage more senses in our message delivery, memory retention is increased. Incorporate multi-media through the use of kiosks, a virtual tour or live web cast. Create an interactive, media-rich adventure -- allowing your attendees to have fun while they're learning. Use your website! Deliver as much information as possible up front so your attendees know what to expect. Collect email addresses and/or cell phone number and deliver your information the very same day!
DON'T compromise your marketing message and strategy. Be true to yourself. Many times, being yourself is what makes customers want to visit and do business with you. |
Be Memorable!
From a marketing standpoint, you need to be memorable. Do something -- anything -- to differentiate yourself from the competition. Be creative! Tradeshow displays have evolved considerably. Whether traditional or contemporary in design, backlit, load bearing, or lightweight fabric construction – the possibilities are endless.
Free Food!
Who likes to stand in long snack bar lines? Rent a portable oven and offer hot baked cookies or get the popcorn popper popping and serve your prospects right on the spot. The aroma of fresh-baked cookies or fresh-popped popcorn is sure to create a draw. Free ice-cold bottled water is another popular item. Imprint your logo and contact information on the packaging and kill two birds with one stone!
Location is Everything
With trade show management, location is often determined by first come-first serve, the luck of the draw, or the depth of your pockets. The earlier you register the better. Since you can't usually control where you land, it's important to create a unique, attractive, and professional package. Make sure your booth is appealing, inviting, and easy to navigate.
Follow-Up!
You've done all this great work! Don't drop the ball! Make sure you have a follow-up strategy in place to handle all the leads and information requests. Strike while the iron is hot!
Don't Compromise
Regardless of the many trade show tips you'll come across, DON'T compromise your marketing message and strategy. Be true to yourself. Many times, being yourself is what makes customers want to visit and do business with you.
By concentrating on the above areas, no matter how much you invest in a trade show, whether it is $5,000 or $500,000, you will achieve success and make your investment worth it!
