Analyze Your Brick Walls!
By Deborah L. Daily

|
This month’s article comes not from a marketing perspective but rather from my experiences as a business owner. Call it food for thought with a just a pinch of marketing. My most recent read is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, a Professor at Carnegie Mellon. Aside from his incredibly positive attitude in spite of a terminal illness, one quote jumped off the pages…
“…The brick walls are there to stop people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.” |
Now when I think about this quote, many thoughts come to mind. The first thought pertains to brick walls…What are the “brick walls” we face? Our pride, ego and defense mechanisms? Competition – local or foreign? Economic & political factors? The misnomer that we’re the only game in town? As business owners, many times we can be our own worst enemies – throwing good ideas out due to short-sightedness or failing to communicate our message or communicating a great message at the wrong time or at the wrong venue. |

The second thought, where exactly is “there” and where are these brick walls located? Does the secret lie within our clients, our prospects or ourselves? What brick walls are present that prevent us from turning a “so-so” mediocre business/career/product into a great business/career/product? It’s important to analyze both your business and your marketing efforts with a clear and objective viewpoint. In marketing, perception is reality. Therefore, it’s important to understand how your company is perceived in the marketplace. What kind of reputation does your company have? How long have you had it? Who has the perceptions which in turn define your reality?
Important note: this isn’t how you perceive the company. It’s how your prospects or customers perceive the company. Are there barriers or stereotypes that need to be overcome? Do processes need to be changed to make life easier for both employees and customers? Do personal fears create brick walls that hold us back or do they create tunnel vision, eliminating our ability to see the peripherals?
The third thought, what does “it” refer to? Does it refer to success, achieving dreams or overcoming obstacles? I love the quote by Lance Armstrong, U.S. cyclist and seven-time consecutive winner of the Tour de France:
“Time is limited, so I better wake up every morning fresh and know that I have just one chance to live this particular day right, and to string my days together into a life of action and purpose.” |
And last, [the brick walls] are there to “stop the other” people. This is my favorite part because it carries with it an eternal attitude of optimism, determination, and perseverance. What type of attitude do we carry into our businesses each day? Do our employees see, hear, and feel the vision? Do our business associates, vendors and clients understand how vital they are in accomplishing the end result?
One of my life long passions is football – pro, college, arena or reruns. It doesn’t matter! Consequently, one of my favorite quotes is by Vince Lombardi, NFL head coach of the Green Bay Packers (1959-1967) and the Washington Redskins (1969),
“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” |
So I encourage you to take a moment and analyze your brick walls. Find out where they are at and tear them down brick by brick or better yet, use a wrecking ball!
