Grab Your Life Jacket
By Deborah L. Daily

According to the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, a life jacket is “a sleeveless jacket of buoyant or inflatable construction, for supporting the wearer in deep water and for preventing a drowning.”
“What does a life jacket have to do with me?” you ask yourself. Now if you can’t swim, a life jacket takes on a very important role. At times, using a life jacket may depend on where you are swimming – a pool, a lake, or an ocean. Each place has a different level of risk involved.
The same is true in marketing. Different endeavors have different risk levels. How do you know if you should leap into the ocean of eCommerce? If you are in a lake, serving multiple interest groups, how do you know what is important to each group? How do you gain consensus and “buy in” into the project? How do you determine needs and priorities? If you’re swimming in your own identity pool, how do you define why you are different from your competitors? |

These are very real issues and challenges that face businesses everyday. So what is this mysterious life jacket that you never want to be without? The answer is simple…surveys. Surveys are a very powerful yet often overlooked tool.
Ocean of eCommerce
What type of eCommerce package do you need? Will your customers use it? Do your customers need it? Just because you build it doesn’t mean they will come. What types of products will they buy? If your customers want the convenience of eCommerce, what types of features would they like to see (personalized account/purchase history, trends and preferences/shipment tracking and status)? By grabbing your Survey Life Jacket (SLJ), you’ll be able to determine wants and needs, and the level of interest, long before you actually take the financial and logistical plunge; therefore, avoid drowning in a costly endeavor with little return.
Lake of Multiple Interest Groups
Let’s assume you are a nonprofit organization and you want to develop a website. Your organization could potentially serve as an umbrella to multiple users or groups. So what types of information does each group want? Will one person handle all the data and work flow or will multiple people need access to “push” information to the mother ship? In a nonprofit, a typical structure might include an executive director, a board of directors, administrative staff, membership and/or the community at large. By grabbing your Survey Life Jacket (SLJ), you are better able to determine each interest group’s wants and needs; create a greater sense of team; and develop a clearer scope of the project’s parameters.
Identity Pool
| Whether you know your identity or not, the dynamics of business and its culture change and evolve – nothing ever remains the same. Successful companies change and adapt to their changing business environments. Why do your current customers purchase from you? According to your vendors, what makes you spectacular? What do your employees think and what strengths or challenges can they identify? Grab your Survey Life Jacket. It will provide vital information about how your company is meeting expectations and what makes you valuable to your customers, vendors, and employees. The SLJ can also provide key indicators explaining what makes your company different from your competition. |

Surveys don’t need to be complex or expensive. They can be done face to face, in print, or electronically. One final thought regarding Survey Life Jackets, if you don’t use them, they can’t provide support or prevent drowning. Be daring, avoid potentially disastrous or inappropriate business decisions, put on your life jacket…utilize the power of surveys!
Be Visible. Get Noticed.
