Help! Tangled in the (World Wide) Web

The Internet is no longer limited to a desktop or even laptop anymore. It’s virtually everywhere. With the advent of smartphones, the Internet is accessible in the palm of your hand with a constant stream of updates, e-mails, appointments, and of course tweets. In the complex World Wide Web we weave, how do you keep yourself from getting tangled?

Here are a few tips to keep your virtual world separate from the real world and keep you from getting lost in cyberspace.

Manage It Better
Is there a better way for your company to organize data and projects? While Microsoft Outlook is certainly a starting point, it doesn’t take long before your calendar and inbox overflow. Consider branching out to more comprehensive project management software. For example, can’t find that e-mail from a client about that important project? Save yourself from mercilessly searching your inbox and put all the relevant information, files, and contacts into project management software such as Basecamp from 37signals. It automatically reminds all staff involved on the project and neatly contains all relevant information in one spot.

Social Media
What’s right for you and your company? Should your company be on Twitter or Facebook? It could be a waste of time if that’s not where your audience is. In Buckaroo’s June Newsletter, we broke down the Twitterverse into age groupings. Audiences aged 34-49 years-old make up one of the largest percentages of Twitter with 34 percent. Is your audience active on Social Media? If the answer is no, then don’t waste valuable time and resources blindly developing a social presence just because it’s the latest hot topic. On the other hand, if your audience is socially active, you still shouldn’t just dive in head first. Come up with a detailed, cohesive plan that stays consistent with the rest of your marketing efforts. Furthermore, while the big four (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube) get the most exposure; don’t neglect niche social media areas relevant to your field. A website such as Quantcast.com can help you find where your audience is online while Buckaroo can help you figure out who your audience is and build a complete picture or profile.

Personal Approach
Social Media is about, just that, being social and building relationships. But, there comes a point where the words on the web can only go so far. In that case, go “old school.” Before the days of super phones that did everything but clean the kitchen sink, people talked to one another. Consider the alternative to the computer and meet in-person if possible. If the person is too far away, the next best thing is Skype, the free video conferencing program. Many things are lost in cyberspace such as body language, facial expression and tone of voice. Even a simple phone call could make a more lasting impression than a faceless e-mail.

The Internet is constantly evolving. Likewise, managing your cyber world is a work in progress too. So, pace yourself. Make a commitment to turn off the computer after 6 PM. If you’re with people, be with those people. Do not constantly check your phone. This makes the other people around you feel less important. Remember to be social in both the virtual world and the real world.

Take Our Survey!
Twitter has exploded over the last few years. The terminology "Tweet" and "Follow Me" have become common speak. With that, the Twitter bird has also become a highly recognizable and unmistakable image. The original Twitter bird was purchased by the company from a British illustrator on iStock Photo for $7.

His name is “Ollie.” What many do not realize is that little Ollie is not actually a part of the official Twitter logo. The official Twitter logo only consists of the word twitter in lowercase and in the special sky blue bubble letter font. The bird was just added as a decorative element. However, the bird has become more recognizable than the actual Twitter logo itself.

Since the bird’s birth in 2006, hundreds, if not thousands of versions of the beloved bird have been created. As a result, Buckaroo decided to showcase just a few of the creative versions various artists have come up with.
