Welcome to Volume 6, Issue 3 of USAutomatic Sprinkler FlashPoint News. Our enewsletter is a free quarterly publication that focuses on brief, but useful information about the fire protection industry. We highlight new products, innovations, and code changes that affect fire protection.

Quarterly Training Workshop Held

Our last quarterly workshop was held on July 20, 2007 with over 30 attendees. This quarter’s focus was on fire protection system impairments with review and discussion on the Indiana Fire Code requirements for impairments.

An “accidental” sprinkler system activation was simulated in the FlashPoint Training Center where participants were able to get their hands on the fire alarm and sprinkler systems to review the sequence of operations for shutting them down and review the code requirements to follow for emergency sprinkler system impairments.

Fire Protection Systems Out of Service

Indiana Fire Code

Section 901.7 of the Indiana Fire Code (IFC), 2003 Edition and Chapter 14 of NFPA 25, 2002 Edition specify steps that must be taken if a fire protection system is removed from service or impaired.

Impairments can either be unexpected (emergency) or scheduled (preplanned). Either way, certain things must be addressed to insure the risk of fire is eliminated or minimized until the fire protection system is restored to service. Both the IFC and NFPA 25 mandate the use of an impairment coordinator; this person is ultimately responsible for seeing the impairment program is followed.

The Evolution of Modern Sprinkler Systems

David L. Asplund, P.E.

The automatic fire sprinkler industry has gone through an exponential expansion of product choices over the last 25 years or so. The lay out technician has literally thousands of sprinkler styles, finishes, temperatures, response times and orifices to choose from to incorporate into the fire sprinkler shop drawings. Hazard classifications and commodities have evolved dramatically over the same time period. What was once a simple mercantile occupancy (ordinary Hazard Group 2) can now be a complex storage protection scenario due to the way the retailer displays his goods.
