| Underground Control Valves to Sprinkler Risers | |||||||||||||||
![]() |
We want to stress the importance of planning for the use of Post Indicator Valves (PIVs) on all water supplies to fire sprinkler systems. |

The October issue of AFSA's Tech Talk discusses this issue. In NFPA 24, 2002-Edition, Paragraph 6.3.1 states "that every connection from a private fire service main to a building shall be provided with a listed PIV located to control all sources of water supply." |

NFPA 13, 2002-Edition, Paragraph A.8.15.1.3 states "PIVs are the preferred outside control valve to be installed at each connection into the building at least 40 feet from the building if space permits" In order of preference after a PIV is a control valve in a cutoff stair tower or valve room accessible from the outside, then a non-rising stem gate valve with an outside operating post, commonly called a Wall Post Indicator Valve (WPIV) and finally a key-operated valve in each connection into the building, commonly known as an underground gate valve and road box." |

The Authority Having Jurisdiction has the final say on what will be acceptable, and there are always exceptions to the main rule, however, be prepared to provide a means for installing PIVs on water supplies to sprinkler risers. |
