Quarterly Training Workshop Held

U.S. Automatic Sprinkler Corporation held its quarterly workshop on Friday, January 16th, 2009 for our service and inspection customers. This workshop focused on several fire alarm topics including a new topic in the fire alarm industry – mass notification systems. We reviewed fire alarm and sprinkler system monitoring requirements and the benefits of using a listed central station monitoring service. Our guest, Mike Lynch, Campus Facility Manager for Kingsway Christian Church and former Fire Marshal for the Town of Avon, returned to discuss how to prevent an expensive service call and sprinkler impairment by ensuring that your sprinkler system is protected from freezing. For more specifics on this topic please read the article “Maintaining Your Sprinkler System During Cold Weather” below.

Mass Notification System, What Is It?

Mass Notification System, What Is It?

Mass notification systems originated with the military in response to terrorism. The Department of Defense requires mass notification systems in all new and remodeled military buildings governed by the UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria). Mass notification systems have been commonplace in military settings for many years and are now beginning to trickle out into our everyday surroundings.

What is a mass notification system? A mass notification system is a system designed to notify people spread out over a large campus, complex, or multi-building facility in the event of an emergency. Mass notification has been around for many years in one form or another. The outdoor severe weather sirens that are tested every Friday at 11:00 AM or the Amber Alert messages that are on the electronic interstate signs, both are forms of mass notification.

Fire Alarm System Monitoring

A common question asked is: “Are fire alarm systems required to be monitored by an off-site monitoring company?” The answer is both yes and no. The Indiana Fire Code does not mandate off-site monitoring of stand alone fire alarm systems; however, some cities and towns have local ordinances mandating off-site monitoring of all fire alarm systems, so it is important to check your local area requirements.

Fire Alarm System Monitoring

If your building has a fire sprinkler system, however, it is required to be monitored by an approved central, remote or proprietary monitoring station per Section 903.4.1 of the Indiana Fire Code, 2008 Edition, regardless of the system size. If your building has both a fire sprinkler system and a fire alarm system, the fire alarm will be monitored by default because it must interconnect with the fire sprinkler system.

Maintaining Your Sprinkler System During
Cold Weather

Did you know that NFPA 25, Standard for Inspection Testing and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems, 2002 Edition requires that prior to the onset of freezing weather that a building owner shall inspect his/her building to ensure that no water filled sprinkler piping is exposed to freezing? All buildings have areas that are vulnerable and should be checked. Damage from a frozen sprinkler system is an expensive repair and is typically not discovered until the pipe thaws, breaks, and flows water.

Maintaining Your Sprinkler System During Cold Weather

1. Freezing Conditions

Cold weather can impact your sprinkler system any time temperatures are below 40°F and water is present.
