Welcome to Volume 7, Issue 1 of USAutomatic Sprinkler FlashPoint News. Our enewsletter is a free quarterly publication that focuses on brief, but useful information about the fire protection industry. We highlight new products, innovations, and code changes that affect fire protection.

Quarterly Training Workshop Held

This quarter's FlashPoint 101 Workshop was held on January 11, 2008. This quarter’s focus was on NFPA 25: Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, 2008 Edition. We reviewed updates to the 2008 Edition and reviewed inspection and testing requirements for wet, dry and pre-action sprinkler systems.

We also discussed the requirements for sensitivity testing of smoke detectors mandated by NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, and demonstrated the Gemini 501A smoke detector sensitivity testing equipment.

NFPA 25: Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and
Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection
Systems, 2008 Edition

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released the 2008 Edition of NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems. Although not legally enforceable in the State of Indiana (Indiana references the 2002 Edition), it is a nationally recognized standard from which fire protection companies will make recommendations. While most of the changes are content-oriented, there are some new sections that have not been included in previous editions that are worth noting.

NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems

The first significant change made throughout the document is the “Component Action Requirements” that are identified at the end of each chapter. NFPA 25, 2008 Edition now states whenever maintenance of a sprinkler system component is performed, such as adjusting, repairing, reconditioning, or replacing, a particular required action shall take place.
