U.S. Automatic Sprinkler Corporation recently held our quarterly workshop for our service and inspection customers. We reviewed and discussed inspection and testing requirements outlined in NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Suppression Systems as they relate to wet and dry sprinkler systems. Jeff Lukemeyer of Peerless Pump discussed fire pump design and inspection and we reviewed annual functional testing requirements for fire alarm systems as outlined in NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code. |

The Fire Sprinkler industry, through no fault of its own, is being affected by a major change in the way water damage claims are being handled by insurance companies and property owners. Since over 90% of sprinkler contractors' General Liability claim dollars are from water damage, the impact of this increased cost has driven contractor insurance rates to all time highs, with more increases expected. |

From time to time "do-it-yourself" articles or kits appear that encourage consumers to install their own automatic fire sprinkler systems. The American Fire Sprinkler Association STRONGLY DISCOURAGES the installation of fire sprinkler systems by people who have not been trained in the proper installation of fire sprinklers. Fire sprinklers should always be installed in accordance with standards of the National Fire Protection Association using approved and/or listed materials. Fire sprinklers protect lives and property. |
