Welcome to Volume 6, Issue 4 of USAutomatic Sprinkler FlashPoint News. Our enewsletter is a free quarterly publication that focuses on brief, but useful information about the fire protection industry. We highlight new products, innovations, and code changes that affect fire protection.

Quarterly Training Workshop Held

This quarter's FlashPoint 101 Workshop was held on October 12, 2007. This quarter’s focus was on alternative fire extinguishing systems with featured guest speaker, Mr. Bill Varone of Chemgard, presenting on Foam Basics 101.

The remainder of the workshop touched on other common types of alternative fire extinguishing systems including low and high pressure carbon dioxide and clean agent suppression systems. We discussed the inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements for each type of alternative fire extinguishing system.

When Are Alternative Automatic Fire Extinguishing
Systems Required?

Indiana Fire Code

With respect to Indiana’s Fire and Building Code requirements, when are “alternative automatic fire extinguishing systems” required? By definition, the word “alternative” implies they are not “required”; rather they can be used in place of something else. Automatic fire protection system requirements in the Indiana Fire and Building Codes mandate the use of sprinklers. The use of “alternative automatic fire extinguishing systems is allowed in lieu of automatic sprinklers as outlined in Section 904 of the Indiana Fire Code, 2003 Edition.
