Washington Township & Avon Fire Department Announce Requirement for Fire Protection Permits

The following is a reprint of an announcement from Michael J. Lynch, Division Chief, Community Safety Division, Avon Fire Department.

“As of June 6, 2006, all new fire protection system installations or modifications to existing fire protection systems in the Town of Avon require a local Fire Protection Permit. For purposes of this ordinance, fire protection systems include any fire detection or fire suppression system, i.e., automatic fire sprinkler systems, manual or automatic fire alarm systems, kitchen hood fire suppression systems, special hazard fire suppression systems. All permits are issued directly through the Washington Township/Avon Fire Department as an agent of the town."

Pending Fire Protection Legislation

Pending Fire Protection Legislation

House Bill 1144 effective July 1, 2006 is no longer under consideration. Some of the new code language stressed the importance of inspection, testing and maintenance of water-based fire protection and fire alarm systems. Criminal prosecution for worker injuries was permissible under this legislation. We will watch for the reintroduction of this bill in the future.

This bill would have held employers personally and legally accountable for injuries to employees due to the reckless actions of the employer in regards to fire protection and safety.

Don't Fear Automatic Sprinkler Systems in IT Rooms

Understand the Concern and Manage the Risks

To be in compliance with NFPA 75 Protection of Information Technology Equipment, information technology equipment rooms and areas located in buildings containing sprinkler technology shall be provided with an automatic sprinkler system. To be in compliance with NFPA 75 information technology equipment rooms and areas located in a non-sprinkler building shall be provided with an automatic sprinkler system or a gaseous clean agent extinguishing system or both. Additionally, automatic detection equipment shall be installed to provide early warning of fire.

Quarterly Training Workshop Held

Quarterly Training Workshop Held

FlashPoint 101, a quarterly workshop, sponsored by USAutomatic Sprinkler, was held on July 14, 2006 at FlashPoint Center. This is a fire detection, alarm, and suppressions systems quarterly workshop. This course is provided at no charge to existing USAutomatic Sprinkler clients and invited guests. This unique, informal training workshop is headed by experienced and certified instructors. This quarter’s instructors included David L. Asphlund, Reliable Automatic Sprinkler, Gary Hewlett, Gamewell FCI, and Brian Sauer, Pike Township Fire Department.
